AFTER TWILIGHT'S GARY WATSON WEIGHS IN ON WRITERS PANEL AT FIRST-EVER COMICULTURE SYMPOSIUM

The University of Houston-Clear Lake presented its first comics symposium today and our own Gary Watson was one of six comics-industry panelists discussing the art of great storytelling. The key aspect of the session was how comics, no matter how dazzling or intricate the imagery, have to have a compelling story behind them to be successful or effective. Gary's contribution to the discussion was from a filmmaker's viewpoint, having made the AFTER TWILIGHT comic book series from a short film to a feature length screenplay to a comic book. (Most of the time, it starts with the comic book). Gary was joined by writers David Doub, Charles Martin, Mark Nasso, James O'Barr, and Bruce Small. The panel was moderated by Terry Wagner, founder of Mental Diversions. Click on the image below to see a clip from the event.

Thanks to the University of Houston-Clear Lake and coordinator Jeffrey Bowen for a great symposium!

AFTER TWILIGHT SERIES IS STILL GOING STRONG!

It's been been about seven months since the conclusion of the AFTER TWILIGHT series, but we're pleased that the story is still valid and is still finding lots of new readers. Writer Gary L. Watson made an appearance at Third Planet to sign and sell copies of the six-book AFTER TWILIGHT series. He was blown away by the response of those who showed up on Free Comic Book Day who said they had heard about the Houston-based story and definitely wanted to get in on the provocative story line. Overall, it was a good day for AFTER TWILIGHT and thanks to TJ (shown in red with Gary in the photo) and Alma at Third Planet for the encore opportunity. And for those who weren't able to make it on Saturday, there are plenty of copies on the stands at Third Planet for you to purchase.

IT WAS ALL GOOD! THANKS, AUSTIN!

We proudly flew the AFTER TWILIGHT banners at the 2012 Wizard World Austin Comic Con last weekend. It was the first con that featured all six issues (the complete story) of AFTER TWILIGHT, so we got to see some long-time fans who had been waiting to see how the story ends, and we introduced many new fans to the series. (We even had a reader who gave it a try by buying Issue #1 on the first day of the event and then came back on the second day to buy the rest because she said she was hooked on the story.)

A couple of days before the Austin Comic Con, we were hosted by the good folks at Austin Books and Comics for a booksigning of Issue #6 (and all the previous issues). The big news here was that Gary and Douglas were joined by co-writer Richard Alvarez who was in town from Northern California to attend the Austin Film Festival. It was great to have his perspective on the series and simply to catch up with the latest projects he's been working on.

All in all, it was another success for AFTER TWILIGHT, and, of course, it was great to be in Austin again!

NEXT STOP--AUSTIN, TEXAS! WE'LL BE SIGNING MORE BOOKS (WITH AN EXTRA-SPECIAL GUEST), AND WE'LL BE RUBBING ELBOWS WITH COMIC BOOK HEROES AT THE WIZARD WORLD AUSTIN COMIC CON

We'll never pass up an opportunity to have a great time in Austin, especially if we're promoting AFTER TWILIGHT. This time, we'll be at Austin Books and Comics at 5002 North Lamar Boulevard from 4 to 7 pm on October 24. Writer Gary Watson and Austin artist Douglas Brown will be signing all six books of the AFTER TWILIGHT series. And they'll be joined by co-writer Richard Alvarez, who is an award-winning screenwriter in his own right. Richard will be in Austin before he heads back home to California. So come on by and get your set of AFTER TWILIGHT books signed by three members of this great creative team.

Later, that weekend, Gary and Douglas will be at the Wizard World Austin Comic Con held at the Austin Convention Center. It promises to be a fantastic event so be sure to stop at Table 2102 in Artist Alley to say hi to Gary and Douglas, have them sign your AFTER TWILIGHT books, and talk about all things AFTER TWILIGHT. We're looking forward to seeing you. You can get more information about the Wizard World Austin Comic Con by clicking on the show icon. See you there!

THANKS TO DAVE AND HIS CREW AT THE WASHINGTON AVENUE BEDROCK CITY COMICS--THE SCENE OF THE AFTER TWILIGHT BOOK SIGNING EVENT FOR ISSUE #6.

It was great to be among our friends at Bedrock City Comics on Washington Avenue. We were really pleased to be able to have our book signing for AFTER TWILIGHT Issue #6 at the store that was the first in Houston to carry the series. That was about a year ago, and now with the series finale firmly in place, we were glad to be with Dave Wahlen and the staff to sign the final issue. Writer Gary Watson and artist Douglas Brown got to meet new AT readers and greet long-time AT fans. We had a great time, made even greater when Dave told us that AFTER TWILIGHT's book signings have been among the most sucessful at the store. Thanks Dave and the whole Bedrock City Comics network and thanks to everyone who came out to support this truly indie effort.

THINK ABOUT IT...IF YOU BUY THE AFTER TWILIGHT COMICS, YOU COULD HELP PUT THE STORY ON THE BIG SCREEN

Think AFTER TWILIGHT would make a good movie? We do, too. Initial plans are underway for writer Gary Watson to attend the 2012 American Film Market in Santa Monica in November to hobnob with producers, distributors, and financiers to pitch the AFTER TWILIGHT feature film project. The comic book series is based on a screenplay by Gary, Richard Alvarez, and Sandra Yates and will be an important part of the marketing package.

Having an established audience for the product will be important as we promote AFTER TWILIGHT in Hollywood so please tell your friends about the series and encourage them to buy their copies, like us on Facebook, and follow us on Twitter. If you haven't purchased your own copies, don't wait for the movie to find out what happens...buy the series now by clicking here. We'd appreciate it, and we'll thank you at the Academy Awards!

THANKS TO ALL WHO CAME TO VISIT WITH THE AFTER TWILIGHT CREW AT
SPACE CITY CON

We always like seeing old friends and making new ones at the comic book conventions. Houston's Space City Con, which was held at the Westin Galleria, was no exception. AFTER TWILIGHT was alive and well in Artist Alley selling the comic book series, including just released Issue #5. Gary Watson and Douglas Brown also headed up a panel discussion about development of the AFTER TWILIGHT series, which started with a short film and morphed into a full-length screenplay that turned into a six-book comic series and will be moving forward (we hope!) to a feature-length film. The panel discussion highllighted a 10-minute video that Gary produced, called THE AFTER TWILIGHT JOURNEY. You can view the video by clicking here.

In the meantime, thanks again for everyone who stopped by to buy and to offer support.

READ ALL ABOUT IT! AFTER TWILIGHT GETS A BOOST FROM THE HOUSTON CHRONICLE

So, just the other day, AFTER TWILIGHT writer Gary Watson is working away at his desk; and he gets a call from HOUSTON CHRONICLE features writer Kyrie O'Connor, saying she would like to interview him about the whole AFTER TWILIGHT thing.

Next thing you know, she's in the office, and he's telling her about his inspiration for the story back in 2001, the short film, the screenplay, the collaborative process with the comic book creative team, and the crazy political, current events connection with the story. She's taking notes and great notes they are!

You can read her story that appears in the July 20 edition of the HOUSTON CHRONICLE print and online. Thanks Kyrie for a great article. We like that you like the series and that you get the whole idea behind it.

WHAT CAN WE SAY? AFTER TWILIGHT FANS ARE THE BEST! THANKS FOR STOPPING BY AT COMICPALOOZA AND SHOWING YOUR SUPPORT!

We'll have to admit that we have a soft spot in our heart for Comicpalooza. This is the comic con where we launched the AFTER TWILIGHT concept in 2011; and this year, with four issues under our belt, fans were as enthusiastic as ever. Writer Gary Watson (decked out as AFTER TWILIGHT baddie Sgt. Streetman) and artist Douglas Brown were on hand to sign copies of Issues #1-4, give out temporary barcode tattoos, and talk about the future of the series. A trade paperback in the works? Maybe. It all depends on how the six-book series goes.

In the meantime, we were pleased to have the just-released Issue #4 on sale at Comicpalooza and Issues #5 and 6 are on still on schedule--just be sure to keep buying either from the online store or from any of the great retailers listed on this website. (Hey! We just added Joker's Child in New Jersey to our list of retailers; so now we've added another store on the east coast!)

And now, here are some pix from Comicpalooza. Thanks to all who stopped by and thanks to the organizers and volunteers. You all did a great job!

WHAT A DIFFERENCE A YEAR MAKES! WE'RE SELLING COMIC BOOKS TO FANS AT THE 2012 COMICPALOOZA IN HOUSTON.

Last year it was just an idea that we floated to Comicpalooza attendees. This year that idea is now the AFTER TWILIGHT comic book series, and we'll be at the 2012 Comicpalooza selling the first four books and talking with loyal fans and new readers. The enthusiastic response at the 2011Comicpalooza encouraged us to move forward with the series, and we're glad we did.

Writer Gary Watson and artist Douglas Brown will be at Booth 700 on May 25-27 at the George R. Brown Convention Center, with the just-released fourth issue of AFTER TWILIGHT. You can get all four issues signed by Gary and Doug, and the first 100 visitors each day will get a free temporary barcode tattoo! And if you haven't yet signed up for the Underground updates, you'll be able to do that, too.

It's been a great ride so far, and we're looking forward to being at the convention that started it all for us. Look for the AFTER TWILIGHT booth, and let's have some fun!

A BIG WEEK COMING UP FOR AFTER TWILIGHT! COME JOIN US!

AFTER TWILIGHT's gearing up for a big week May 21-27. First and most important, Issue #4 will be released on May 23; and it takes Jen (and you) inside Camp Purity, the theocracy's "playground" for handling society's sinners. Very creepy.

Then that evening from 4 to 7, writer Gary Watson and artist Douglas Brown will be at Bedrock City Comics at 4602 Washington Avenue in Houston to sign the newly printed Issue #4 and Issues #1-3 as well. Be sure to get to Bedrock and meet the AFTER TWILIGHT creators and be among the first to get the new comic.

That weekend, May 25-27, is the big Houston comic book event, the
2012 Comicpalooza at the George R. Brown Convention Center. Gary and Douglas will be in the Dealers Area at Booth #700 to meet and greet you and sign more books. This will be the second Comicpalooza for AFTER TWILIGHT, and just like last year (and with a salute to the Texas theocracy), we'll have temporary barcode tattoos for the first 100 visitors to the booth each day.

So be there for all the action. We can't wait to see you.

THANKS TO TJ AND THE THIRD PLANET CREW ON FREE COMIC BOOK DAY. IT WAS AN HONOR TO BE A PART OF IT!

AFTER TWILIGHT had a great day at the Third Planet Sci-Fi Superstore in Houston. We talked to a lot our loyal readers and got to meet some new fans among the crowd who couldn't help but be intrigued by our story about the terrors of a future Texas theocracy. We can't help but think we've struck a chord with many people who are just as concerned as we are about extremism of any kind. Thanks to all who bought the first half of the six-part series (Issue #4 will be released on May 23) and signed up to be members of The Underground. You'll be getting exclusive news and information in the coming weeks leading up to Issue #4. "THOUGHT PROVOKING AND ENGAGING"--ANOTHER THUMBS UP FROM JENN THE LIBRARIAN FOR ISSUE #3

Hip Mama Jenn's review of AFTER TWILIGHT Issue #3 really made our day. Jenn, who is a librarian in the Houston area and a comic-book blogger, gave kudos to Douglas Brown's artwork and his drawings of Houston sites and scenes. She's also really digging the story that warns against mixing religious extremism and politics--it can be hazardous to the health of a free society. She writes, "It's a scary, thrilling, politically charged story that is both timely and timeless." Thanks for the review, Jenn, we like the way you librarians think! Everyone should check it out! We always like introducing AFTER TWILIGHT to a new audience of comic book readers and there were quite a few of them coming to talk about it. Buyers were able to get signed copies from writer Gary Watson and artist Douglas Brown. We're definitely looking forward to being at the ninth annual Staple!

MORE ACCOLADES FOR AFTER TWILIGHT. THIS TIME--REVIEWS FROM CANADA!

There's nothing more satisfying than when we get a review from someone who totally "gets it." Sequential Tart really digs deep into the content of the story of AFTER TWILIGHT Issues 1 & 2. The reviewer Suzette Chan is a Canadian who's tracking the US political environment and draws parallels to the Texas theocracy described in AFTER TWILIGHT. Her lengthy reviews of both issues are thoughtful and well-researched, and we appreciate her observations on both the content and the artwork:

"After Twilight #1 is uncanny in its political relevance and impressive for pulling off a cliffhanger ending that depends on successfully dramatizing the ideas that inspired the story."--Sequential Tart (AFTER TWILIGHT Issue #1)

"Waiting for the trade paperback would deprive you of the fun of reading After Twilight and its shocking developments as you read about shocking developments in this very scary U.S. election year."--Sequential Tart (AFTER TWILIGHT Issue #2)

ANOTHER TWILIGHT WITNESS VIDEO IS IN THE WORKS.

This time, we're highlighting the First Amendment and how freedom of religion, speech, the press, and the right of assemby and petitioning the govenrment are intrinisic to the AFTER TWILIGHT story. The video begins with people reciting the First Amendment and features an event sponsored by the Houston chapter of Americans United for Separation of Church and State. Watch for the video on this web site, our Facebook page, and on YouTube.

JENN THE LIBRARIAN REVIEWS AFTER TWILIGHT--REALLY!

Crazy how life can sometimes be. AFTER TWILIGHT got a great review on Hip Mama Jenn's livejournal. Getting positive reviews is always welcomed, but this time, it was special. The reviewer is a Houston-area librarian named Jenn; and of course, AFTER TWILIGHT's heroine is a Houston-area librarian named Jen. We like that Jenn the reviewer really got to the heart of the AFTER TWILIGHT story about the dangers of religious extremism and gave an appreciative nod to the Houston setting. (We like Houston, too.) You can read Hip Mama Jenn's review of AFTER TWILIGHT under February 13, 2012. Jenn has met Jen--and we're really happy about that.

ANOTHER GREAT REVIEW FOR AFTER TWILIGHT ISSUE #2!

The HOUSTON PRESS Art Attack Blog included AFTER TWILIGHT Issue #2 as one of the best comics in January 2012. We're glad to be in the company of comics coming from Marvel, IDW, and Image. Thanks to Jef With One F for the positive review of our indie comic, particularly praising Douglas Brown's art. We think he's doing a great job with AFTER TWILIGHT, too.

WE'RE NOW SELLING IN STORES IN STATES ON BOTH COASTS (AND, OF COURSE, IN OUR HOME STATE OF TEXAS)

AFTER TWILIGHT was just recently added to the shelves at the House of Secrets in Burbank, California and the Comic Shack in Bradenton, Florida. We're working to get AFTER TWILIGHT in even more stores nationwide, so if you have a comic book retailer that you think should carry AFTER TWILIGHT, send us an email and we'll make contact. And as always, we really appreciate the support we're getting from comic book retailers in Texas. You can see the entire list of stores on our Retailers page here.

NEW REVIEW AND MORE PUBLICITY FOR AFTER TWILIGHT

AFTER TWILIGHT Issues 1 and 2 got a great review from the Girls Read Comics Too web site that includes this quote: "After Twilight makes for a startlingly scary, interesting and brave comic." We appreciate the love.

Girls Read Comics Too views the comic world from a female point of view so we're glad they found a worthy heroine in AFTER TWILIGHT's librarian Jen Frazier.

Also, the Houston chapter of Americans United for Separation of Church and State features AFTER TWILIGHT prominently on its new web site in an article titled Church State Separation Graphic Novel. Houston's AU is a great organization with an important mission that is reflected in the AFTER TWILIGHT story. Dateline--Houston, August 2011

Was it life imitating art? Texas Governor Rick Perry held a prayer rally at Houston's Reliant Stadium on August 6, where 30,000 evangelicals gathered for a full day of prayer and fasting, calling on God to save our nation in crisis. The AFTER TWILIGHT story follows the theocratic takeover of the Texas government, as the state secedes from the United States.

The TWILIGHT WITNESS video blog crew was at the rally, which was called The Response, documenting the proceedings that included prayers, sermons, and Scripture readings, some of which were recited by Governor Perry and Governor Sam Brownback of Kansas. Some say this is a serious breach of the separation of church and state, especially since the rally was co-sponsored by extreme, religious organizations that have a history of intolerant viewpoints toward non-Christians, alternative lifestyles, and progressive thought.

TWILIGHT WITNESS also covered local demonstrations and assemblies that expressed opposition to The Response. The video blog piece will be posted on this web site later this month.
